Denise and Gary Cullen are interviewed by the Drug Policy Alliance about the loss of their son Jeff Cullen to an accidental overdose, the epidemic level of the overdose crisis in California and the 911 Good Samaritan Bill they helped pass through the legislature. This bill allows for someone in the presence of another experiencing an overdose to call for help without fear of arrest or prosecution for paraphernalia, being intoxicated, or possession of a small amount of drugs for personal use. This limited immunity applies to only the person calling and the person experiencing an overdose. This will save countless lives in California to preventable fatal drug overdoses – the #1 cause of accidental injury deaths, surpassing even motor vehicle accidents. The bill was signed by Governor Brown and enacted January 1, 2013. California follows 10 other states in implementing this law. The interview was originally taped on March 2nd, 2012.
