Ithaca, like much of the country, has been touched by a heroin epidemic. But this idyllic city has a very different idea about how to address the problem.
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the rise in opioid abuse and fatal overdoses in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were nearly 28,000 fatalities due to opioids in 2014— more than any other year on record— and at least half involved prescription drugs.
The fight against heroin is making it tough for police departments in central Illinois to keep up. Lawmakers and police chiefs came together to talk about heroin.
Addiction involves craving for something intensely, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences. Addiction changes the brain, first by subverting the way it registers pleasure and then by corrupting other normal drives such as learning and motivation. Although breaking an addiction is tough, it can be done.
